Welcome to Staying Power: Closing The Adherence Gap In Osteoporosis, developed to help healthcare professionals, patients and those interested in osteoporosis explore why so many patients fail to take treatment correctly and stay on treatment for the required length of time (known as ‘adherence’). Staying Power highlights the implications of this crucial issue in real terms – the personal, social, economic and financial cost to individuals, physicians, societies and healthcare systems.

Jean-Yves ReginsterAlmost half of people with osteoporosis stop their treatment after only one year, putting themselves at an increased risk of fracture. In the worst cases, this can lead to hospitalisation or even death. The implications of lack of adherence are staggering: fractures do not just affect the individual; society and healthcare systems also have to shoulder significant associated costs.
Staying Power: Closing The Adherence Gap In Osteoporosis highlights the real cost of lack of adherence, emphasising that we must work together to keep patients on their treatment and help prevent a serious global issue becoming a worldwide crisis.
Britt EklandAs someone with osteoporosis, I am urging all patients to seek advice on how best to stay on their treatment.
Osteoporosis fractures can be fatal and, by not taking treatment, millions of patients are putting themselves at risk.
Adhering to treatment could mean avoiding a life of decreased mobility, chronic pain and low self-esteem. If you are finding staying on therapy a challenge, it is important to recognise that support is available. If physicians, patients, families and support groups work together, we can help women stay on treatment and reduce the burden of fractures.
